The journey of true discipleship begins and thrives with faith in Jesus Christ. Faith is not just a feeling or belief—it is the foundation of our relationship with the Lord. It shapes how we live, think, and respond to His call. Without faith, it is impossible to walk as a disciple, because faith is the very essence of what pleases God.
The Importance of Faith
The Bible is clear about the necessity of faith:
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).
Faith is the starting point of discipleship. It is through faith that we:
1. Believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior – Faith opens the door to salvation, for it is by grace through faith that we are saved (Ephesians 2:8-9).
2. Trust in God’s promises – Faith helps us stand firm in God’s Word, even when circumstances seem uncertain or challenging.
3. Rely on God’s strength and guidance – As disciples, we acknowledge our dependence on Him and trust Him to lead us every step of the way.
Faith that Pleases God
True faith is more than acknowledging that God exists—it is actively trusting Him in every area of life. The disciples who walked with Jesus exemplified this faith. They left behind their careers, families, and comfort zones to follow Him. They trusted His words, even when they didn’t fully understand them, and believed in His power to do the impossible.
This kind of faith pleases the Lord because it demonstrates our dependence on Him and our desire to glorify Him in all things. It’s a faith that goes beyond convenience and comfort, choosing to follow Jesus no matter the cost.
Nurturing Your Faith
Faith is like a muscle—it grows stronger when exercised. Here are a few ways to deepen your faith in Jesus Christ:
• Spend time in the Word – Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). Study Scripture to know God’s promises and character.
• Pray fervently – Prayer strengthens our relationship with God and helps us trust Him with our worries, hopes, and dreams.
• Walk in obedience – Faith grows as we step out in obedience, trusting that God will provide and guide.
• Surround yourself with believers – Fellowship with others who are pursuing Christ will encourage and sharpen your faith.
Reflective Question
Take a moment to reflect on your own faith:
Do you trust Jesus with every area of your life, or are there parts you still hold back?
True faith means surrendering all to Him—your fears, dreams, and plans—and believing that He is faithful to do what He has promised.
Closing Thought
Faith in Jesus Christ is the first and most important characteristic of a true disciple. It’s the foundation that supports everything else in our walk with Him. Without faith, we cannot please the Lord, but with faith, we can move mountains, endure trials, and grow closer to the Savior who loves us.
Let’s strive to deepen our faith, trusting Jesus wholeheartedly and following Him with unwavering confidence. Will you take the next step in faith today?
