Loving Others and Dying to Self: A True Disciple’s Heart

One of the most profound characteristics of a true disciple of Christ is love—selfless, sacrificial, and patient love. Jesus made it clear that love is the defining mark of His followers:
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35).
But loving others isn’t always easy. It requires us to die to ourselves daily, laying down our own desires, preferences, and pride to serve others with humility and patience. This is the kind of love Jesus demonstrated, and it’s the kind of love He calls us to embody as His disciples.
Love That Puts Patience First
Patience is one of the purest expressions of love. The Bible teaches, “Love is patient, love is kind…” (1 Corinthians 13:4). True love is willing to wait, endure, and remain steadfast even in challenging situations. It means choosing to respond with grace instead of frustration, especially when others test our limits.
Jesus modeled patience throughout His ministry. He showed patience with His disciples when they doubted or misunderstood Him, with sinners who came to Him for forgiveness, and even with those who opposed Him. His patience was rooted in love—a love that sought the best for others, no matter the cost.
Dying to Yourself
Loving others as Christ loves us requires us to die to ourselves daily. This means letting go of selfishness, pride, and personal agendas to serve and uplift others. Dying to self isn’t a one-time decision—it’s a continuous process of surrendering our will to God and choosing His way over our own.
Here are some practical examples of dying to self:
• Forgiving someone who hurt you – Letting go of resentment and extending grace, even when it’s hard.
• Serving someone in need – Sacrificing your time, energy, or resources to help others, even when it’s inconvenient.
• Choosing to listen instead of speak – Putting someone else’s thoughts and feelings above your desire to be heard.
• Praying for those who mistreat you – Asking God to bless and change the hearts of those who oppose you.
When we die to ourselves, we reflect the love of Christ, who gave His life for us. As Paul writes:
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20).
Practical Ways to Love Others
1. Show Patience – Take a deep breath and choose kindness, even when others frustrate you.
2. Be Present – Give your undivided attention to someone who needs to be heard.
3. Serve Without Expectation – Help others without looking for recognition or repayment.
4. Encourage and Build Up – Speak words of life and encouragement to those around you.
5. Pray for Others – Lift up others in prayer, asking God to bless, guide, and protect them.
Reflective Question
Are you loving others with the selfless, patient love of Christ, or are there areas where selfishness or impatience might be hindering you?
Closing Thought
Loving others and dying to self are at the core of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. When we choose to love selflessly, putting patience and humility at the forefront, we reflect the heart of our Savior and draw closer to Him.
As you go about your day, ask the Holy Spirit to help you love others with Christ’s love. Let Him guide you to die to yourself, serving and loving with a heart that seeks to glorify God. In doing so, you’ll not only grow as a disciple but also shine His light to the world.
Let’s commit to loving others and dying to ourselves daily, becoming true reflections of Christ’s love!
